Our Mission: Our purpose is to foster independence and improve the "Quality of Life" for the individual with a brain injuryby assessing his or her needs as well as those of the family support system. Our efforts will focus on connecting each person with the appropriate services and resources in the community. We will strive to provide relevant and practical information to the individuals', their family's, and service providers.
Function: To coordinate services for individuals who have survived a brain injury. Brain Injury is defined as "an insult to the brain, not of degenerative or congenital nature, but caused by a physical force that may produce a diminished or altered state of consciousness, which results in an impairment of cognitive abilities or physical functioning. It can also result in the disturbance of behavioral or emotional functioning. These impairments may be either temporary or permanent and cause partial or total functional disability or psycological maladjusment. -BIS Assoc. of Va
History: Assessing the number of individuals and the needs of the individuals in the Henry County and Martinsville area with brain injuries resulted in a seed grant from the United Way of Martinsville and Henry County to establish services directed to and for individuals with traumatic brain injury. Services expanded in 2004 through a grant from the Harvest foundation, resulting in the permanent establishment of services directed to these individuals. With additional grant monies from state general funds, administrated by the Department of Rehabilitative Services, the program was expanded further in 2007. The expansion included case management for Henry County, The City of Martinsville, Patrick County (including the town of Stuart), Pittslyvania County, and The City of Danville.
Our Goal: To seek out, promote, and coordinate services and information to brain injured individuals, to act as advocates for services that directly apply to these individuals, and to promote independence and improve quality of life for individuals with brain injury.
